Big Weekend for Men's and Women's basketball

The men have what may be their biggest game of the season on Thursday against AZ at 6:00 pm in the Hunty. A win over AZ could really add to their already solid tourney resume. They play ASU on Saturday night, also at 6:00 pm, and this is a big-time revenge game that we shouldn't have much problem winning.

The women have a big game on Friday night at 7:00 against conference-leading Colorado. The Buffs are a balanced team the the best point guard in the conference and she's one of the best players in the country. We lost to them by 11 or so in Boulder and we need this win to add to our solid resume in hopes of hosting the first two rounds of the NCAA tourney.

If you are able, come and show your support for both the men and the women this weekend and let's be the 6th man they need to help them get these huge wins they need. Go Utes!!

The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel revisited his Way-Too-Early (WTE) CFB Top 25, after all the coaching and early portal moves. He has Utah cracking his top 10 at #9.

Nothing like high expectations! Great to get the love, but just feels like too much, too soon.

PRESS RELEASE: Big 12 Announces Dates For 2024 Utah Football Season

Utes usher in new era of Utah Football in 212 days

DALLAS – The new era for the University of Utah Football program will officially begin in 212 days as the Big 12 Conference announced game dates for the 2024 season today.

Utah kicks off the year on Thursday, Aug. 29 against the Southern Utah Thunderbirds in Rice-Eccles Stadium, followed by a home non-conference battle against the Baylor Bears on Saturday, Sept. 7. The Utes wrap up their non-conference slate at Utah State on Saturday, Sept. 14.

Big 12 play will begin on Saturday, Sept. 21 at Oklahoma State in Boone Pickens Stadium with the Cowboys appearing in the conference championship game in two of the last three seasons. Utah will enter the 2024 season with a 445-260-19 (.627) all-time record in conference games with 28 conference championships.

Utah returns to Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 28, taking on the Arizona Wildcats, who finished the year ranked in the top-15 in all three postseason polls. The Utes are 26-20-2 all-time against Arizona, winning six of the last seven games in the series.

Utah heads into a BYE week on Oct. 5 followed by a road match-up against the Arizona State Sun Devils with the Utes on a four-game winning streak in the all-time series. The game date will be set by the league and TV networks as the season gets closer, with possibilities including Friday, Oct. 11 or Saturday, Oct. 12.

Old foes will collide in Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 19 when the Utes host TCU. Utah is 5-3 against its old Mountain West opponent, including a memorable, come-from-behind victory for the Utes in 2008 inside Rice-Eccles Stadium (13-10).

Before heading into its second BYE week of the season (Nov. 2), Utah will travel to Houston, Texas, to take on the Houston Cougars on Saturday, Oct. 26. The Utes and Houston have only faced each other four times, but haven't battled since 1978.

Coming off the BYE, new and old rivals will meet with Utah hosting BYU for the first time in Rice-Eccles Stadium since 2018. The game, which will take place on Saturday, Nov. 9, will mark the 102nd meeting between the two teams with Utah holding a 62-35-4 overall record and a 40-17-3 record in Salt Lake City.

What was known as the "Rumble in the Rockies" in years past, Utah will play Colorado in Boulder on Saturday, Nov. 16 before hosting the Iowa State Cyclones on Saturday, Nov. 23 for its final home game of the year. Utah has won the last seven meetings against the Buffaloes while the Utes and the Cyclones will meet for the first time since 2010 (W, 68-27).

Utah will finish up regular season play on Friday, Nov. 29 at UCF in Orlando, Florida. It will mark the first meeting between the two teams and Utah's second trip to the Sunshine State in the last three seasons.

OT Jayden de Laura

de Laura transferred to Texas State this offseason, but apparently has withdrawn after only a week there. The students apparently were not happy about him coming to school due to the lawsuit against him as a result of a sexual assault allegation while he was in high school and were planning a protest, but there has been no official announcement about the situation that I could find.

Here's a local news story (caution, plays with sound automatically)

I have very little pity for the Texas State staff, whose returning starter transferred to Western Kentucky when de Laura signed there, but I feel bad for their fans who just enjoyed their first ever bowl game and bowl win and were hoping to see some improvement and maybe compete for a Sun Belt title.

Holy Cow!! Lady Utes dominate in OT to beat #2 UCLA!!

UCLA was ranked as his as #2 for a while and fell to 5th after a loss to USC last week. They beat #3 Colorado on the first leg of this trip and came into the Huntsman Center ranked #2 again.

Utah led for most of the game and after only holding the lead for less than one minute for the entire game, UCLA saw their hopes of a victory on ESPN's Big Monday slip away when Ines Viaira made a game-tying lay-up on an inbound play with about two seconds left in regulation.

Utah went on to dominate overtime, outscoring the Bruins by 13 in the extra period to win the game 94-81. Utah was plagued by silly turnovers and poor shot selection on occasion. However, the #16 Lady Utes played extremely hard on defense and came away with the victory over the #2 ranked (as of today's rankings) UCLA Bruins.

They've got four games on the road before returning to the Huntsman Center - two this weekend at Oregon followed by a two game road trip to Washington the next weekend. I've said it before and I'll say it again - this is a fun team to watch. Come out and watch them play and give them a shot. Go Lady Utes!!

Arizona, ORST, and UW transfers.

As a reminder, when a coach leaves, the transfer portal is open for the school that they're leaving. I don't love that rule, but it is the current situation. As a result, the following players have declared from these three nearby schools (and are currently not committed elsewhere). I mentioned in another thread that I don't think Utah's staff feels like they have any more "needs" and will take the best players available to fill depth or challenge the existing starters. Sorted by years available, as far as I can tell, and then by snaps played (in parenthesis):

Seniors:
UW QB Rogers (2,885 at MSST, but he's back in the portal)
UW CB Muhammad (2,146)
UW LB Barr (1,892 at Vandy, but he's back in the portal)
UW S Turner (1,789)
UW S Powell (1,679)
UW OG Kalepo (1,240)
OSU WR Bolden (1,010)
AZ LB Heimuli (396)

Juniors:
AZ CB Prysock (1,061)
AZ CB Davis (746)
AZ RB Coleman (621)
UW CB Green (318)
AZ TE Burnett (246)
UW S Nunley (213)
AZ RB Rocker (123)
UW CB McCutcheon (84)
UW QB Haskell (52)
UW TE Waiss (44)
AZ DE Harris (0)

Sophomores:
UW OL Brailsford (976)
AZ OG Pulido (329)
UW LB Harnetiaux (8)
AZ S Rushing (0)

Freshmen:
AZ TE Thomas (1)
UW QB Mack (0)
