All of the assistant coaches were made available for interviews today , and I will have the full gist of everything later. I did want to at least highlight some things and also keep in mind if there’s certain groups not fully mentioned, John Coon, interviewed some of the coaches for me today as well.

Of the backup quarterbacks, Ludwig was really high on the growth and development of Brandon Rose. He had positive things to say on Isaac Wilson. But also tempered expectations by saying he’s a freshman that should still be in high school at the moment. He’s extremely impressed with how Wilson processes things, as well as his arm, though.

He highlighted Daidren Zipperer and Dijon Stanley as two really nice, spring surprises. There were some others too, but I need to listen back to the audio. With Stanley, he brings such a diversified skill set that he’s a very intriguing change-of-pace running back. With Zipperer, Alvis Whitted mentioned that it’s really been about reps and being there every day to take advantage of them. He said he’s not surprised at all with the growth that Zipperer has shown, because he knows the type of high school program he came from.

Whitted’s eyes lit up when talking about the difference that it makes for his wide receivers now that Rising is back and healthy. He didn’t hold back that it’s a night and day difference from last year‘s practices and games, to now.

Of course Whitted highlighted Singer, but he was also very complementary with the football IQ of Lyons.

Ganther Absolutely loves his room, but he wants to see a definitive every down back emerge. He admitted though that those cost a lot of NIL to either bring in or keep. In discussing Mike Mitchell, Ganther is extremely high on him. He said he excels on the field and is extremely bright and engaging in the classroom, but the problem is getting him to the classes.( Alex take: This has been a theme that Utah focused on him really hard with last year and one of the big reasons why he didn’t play. They just had him focus on school). He was slowed up a little bit by various injuries, including a hamstring according to Ganther, so when he’s practicing —he’s already fast — Ganther wants him to play faster. The leadership of Bernard has been huge for the room. It's nice having his versatility back.

The tight end group is a three-headed monster already, with King, Kuithe, and Bentley. Carson Ryan will start practicing with the team in the late spring and summer. The excitement on Freddie Whittingham’s face is very apparent when he’s talking about his guys.

Offensive lineman Caleb Lomu has integrated really well into the starting unit at left tackle. This should make an extremely imposing tackle group, with him and also sliding Spencer Fano to right tackle.

Kenan Johnson and Cameron Calhoun have integrated seamlessly into the secondary. Scalley credited both of them and they’re individual skill set as well as the technique that Shah teaches them.

The safety group is coming along extremely well. Scalley believes that when all is said and done, Tao Johnson will be elite.

Akana has added enough weight to get himself into the defensive end rotation now. Connor O’Toole has really taken a step forward with his confidence.

It sucks to lose Damuni, but Swan is really excited for the young guys that are in the program, as well as recently returned missionaries, like Sione Fotu (2023), and Trey Reynolds (2024). He joked, and said that he asked Reynolds if he even really went on a mission, because of how good of shape he was in when he got back.

Defensive tackles just continue to gain knowledge, confidence, and continue to improve under Elliss.

•Main reason he chose Utah was the culture and the program, believes it’s one of the best in the country. Loves being able to play alongside Cam Rising and learn from him.
•Believes that it’s a great system to play in and compete. Says it’s a challenging playbook to learn but he thinks in this program he has the right guys to challenge him and teach him to reach their level.
•Loves the stability this program provides.

Damian Alford WR

• Aims to be better everyday and believes one of his biggest strengths is his physicality at the wide receiver position.
•Loves playing against the defensive backs, they make him work for his receptions every practice and he believes that will really help prepare him for the season.

Caleb Lohner TE

• Says it’s new to play football again after not playing since junior high, but says it fun and challenging, feels like it’s learning a new language in a few months time.
• Thanked the coaches and players for believing in him as a player and trusting him to pick it back up to play and make the most of it.

• When it came to starting again, Caleb said it was a long time coming, he’s been provided certain gifts and the way his body moves it kind of made sense. Noted Utah came to him and presented an opportunity and he would have felt like a fool not to take it.

•Biggest challenge for Caleb is learning the offense and being a football player. The last 4 years have been strictly basketball, now he’s focused transitioning into a football program and football language.

•100 percent focused on football, no attention on basketball at the moment.

•Loves the coaches and the program

The move was made possible because the Ravens were 1-2 weeks away from likely elevating him to their 53 man roster. Depending on what comes of everything with Tua, this is a good situation for Tyler, plus he’s home.

Early thoughts are that the Oregon/ORST total feels low and I think I'd take ORST to cover, but rivalry games are always weird.
I don't recommend betting Utah games, but if Cam's not playing, bet USU to cover and bet the under, as Andy will run the ball 60 times if he has to, particularly with 4 running backs.
Tulsa isn't good, but I think they could cover 3 TD at home.
If ND hadn't just lost to NIU I think I'd pick Purdue to cover, but I think the Irish are going to come out pissed and run up the score.
Baylor/AF under looking good, even at only 43. It's only one FBS game for each team, but Baylor scored 12 against Utah and AF scored 7 against SJSU.

Well, Wilson started slow, but got his footing. He had some really encouraging moments. Having Rising Jack next week will be big though, even though Whittingham probably won’t tip his hand on that.

Wilson was the first true freshman QB to threw for 3 TDs in his first start. He also threw for nearly 250 yards, finishing with 239.

Micah Bernard (102 yards) and Mike Mitchell (75 yards) will be a potent 1-2 RB punch. Both had great games today, but Utah’s goal line blocking needs to get better for them.

Utah has an embarrassment of riches as receiving targets and that’s not on full display just yet.

The defense started slow, but some of that had to do with the offense not sustaining early drives and the D having to be back out fast. Still not a good excuse.

Van Fillinger led the defense in tackles, something that’s pretty awesome for a defensive lineman. He the defensive MVP of the season so far.

Get used to hearing the name Cam Calhoun. He’s going to be special. That was an impressive INT today.

Credit to Bryson Barnes, the Pig Farmer came to play, but Wilson outfield him.

It’s a relationship that was forged on 'Schitt’s Creek,' and it seems to continue. It really works for both of us, and I guess for whoever said, 'Come on and do it.'"
