It's been three years since Álvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) united the super middleweight titles and he has since defended the group four times with unanimous-decision wins against Gennadiy Golovkin, John Ryder, Jermell Charlo and Jaime Munguía. He is heavily favored to take care of business against Berlanga, to the point that the biggest question is what he'll do next.

Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) isn't a nothing opponent, though, and all it could take is one big punch from the 27-year-old to shock the boxing world.

Canelo Alvarez (61-2-2) has won four straight fights and competes for the second time this year. He defeated Jaime Munguia via unanimous decision this past May.

Edgar Berlanga (22-0) knocked out Padraig McCrory in the sixth round this past February in his only appearance of 2024. His previous five fights before McCrory were all decision wins.

Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 knockouts) defends his WBC, WBA and WBO super middleweight titles against Berlanga (22-0, 17 knockouts).

Alvarez, at 34 years old still one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in all of boxing, has been criticized for not agreeing to a matchup with Phoenix native David Benavidez. That ultimately sent Benavidez to the light heavyweight division, and Alvarez fought and defeated Jaime Munguia on another traditional Alvarez fight weekend, Cinco de Mayo.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga start time

Date: Saturday, September 14
Time: 8 p.m. ET | 5 p.m. PT
Main event start time (approx.): 11:30 p.m. ET | 8:30 p.m. PT
Location: T-Mobile Arena — Las Vegas

The Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga main card airs at 8 p.m. ET. Canelo and Berlanga should make their way to the ring around 11:30 p.m. ET, depending on how long the undercard fights last.

Canelo is on a four-fight win streak since 2022, beating Jaime Munguia in May. It took him eleven months to become the undisputed super middleweight champion. However, the future Hall of Famer will not defend the IBF title, as he will get stripped of it by fight night.

The top-ranked fighter in the WBA’s super middleweight rankings, Berlanga signed a multi-fight deal with Matchroom intending to face Canelo. The 27-year-old has 17 wins via knockout, his last fight being a knockout win in February against Padraig McCrory.

The unique event at Sphere in Las Vegas is headlined by a bantamweight title fight between champion Sean O’Malley (18-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC) and challenger Merab Dvalishvili (17-4 MMA, 10-2 UFC). And in the co-main event, women’s flyweight champ Alexa Grasso (16-3-1 MMA, 8-3-1 UFC) and former titleholder Valentina Shevchenko (23-4-1 MMA, 12-3-1 UFC) meet in a trilogy rematch.

“This is good; he has finally mentioned my name, and now we are going to fight. Because I have been calling him for six years, and he has been ignoring me. It feels good that he finally wants to fight me,” said Dvalishvili in an interview.

The O’Malley vs. Dvalishvili bout has been in the works since March. In February, Dvalishvili defeated Henry Cejudo by unanimous decision at UFC 298 before O’Malley beat Marlon Vera at UFC 299 in March.

Sean O'Malley and Alexa Grasso will make their second title defences against Merab Dvalishvili and Valentina Shevchenko.

LAS VEGAS – Sean O'Malley and Merab Dvalishvili had their final bit of pre-fight interaction at UFC 306 ceremonial weigh-ins Friday with one last staredown.

The headliner will see “Suga” Sean O’Malley once again put this Bantamweight belt up for grabs, as he is set to square off with Merab Dvalishvili.

This will be O’Malley’s second title defense of his mixed martial arts career. After winning the championship by beating Aljamain Sterling at UFC 292, he successfully held on to the belt when he defeated Marlon Vera by unanimous decisions at UFC 299 back in March. The Montana native has won six of his last seven fights (with one no-contest in 2022). He has a career record of 18-1 with 12 knockouts.

This is Dvalishvili’s first shot at a championship in the UFC. The 33-year-old has been part of the promotion since 2017, but has really made himself a contender as of late. He last beat Henry Cejudo at UFC 298 in February, marking his 10th straight victory. Dvalishvili is 17-4 in his career, all but four of his wins have come by decision.

O'Malley (18-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC) will put his bantamweight belt on the line against Dvalishvili (17-4 MMA, 10-2 UFC) in the main event of Noche UFC (pay-per-view, ESPNews, ESPN+) at Sphere in what UFC CEO Dana White has touted to be a one-of-a-kind fight card, which airs on ESPN+ pay-per-view following prelims on ESPNews and ESPN+.

After both made weight earlier in the day, they engaged in the final staredown in front of fans and media. It was intense and both men were locked in. O'Malley looks to log a second consecutive title defense while Dvalishvili looks to capture gold and set the UFC record for longest winning streak in 135-pound history.

USU preview

Utah faces in-state opponent Utah State for the first time since 2015 (Utah won 24-14), and the first time in Logan since 2012 (Utah lost 27-20). The Aggies suffered a very tumultuous offseason, losing a significant amount of players in the transfer portal before their head coach was fired as a result of a Title IX investigation and their projected starting cornerback Andre Seldon, Jr. died while cliff-diving.

So far the Aggies are 1-1, beating FCS Robert Morris 36-14 and then losing to USC 48-0.

Let’s take a look at what USU lost from last year. First, the offense:

WR - Vaughn: 69.2 on 926 snaps (1,734 career snaps), Vaughn had 90 catches on 122 targets (73.8%) for 936 yards (10.4 ypc) with 11 TD last year. Vaughn got a camp invite but it does not appear he was picked up anywhere.

WR - Davis: 76.7 on 544 snaps (890 career snaps), Davis had 36 catches on 59 targets (61.0%) for 628 yards (17.4 ypc) with 6 TD last year. He transferred to Ole Miss in the offseason.

OT - Frias: 49.6 on 531 snaps (552 career snaps), Frias was better run blocking (53.6) than pass blocking (45.7).

QB - Legas: 73.8 on 484 snaps (1,130 career snaps), Legas went 138/212 (65.1%) for 1,815 (8.6 ypa) with 19 TD and 8 INT last year. He transferred to Tulsa in the offseason.

OG - Meacham: 50.8 on 409 snaps (1,455 career snaps), Meacham was significantly better run blocking (51.6) than pass blocking (36.5), although not rated well at either.

RB - Booth: 83.4 on 353 snaps, the JUCO transfer had 120 carries for 803 yards (6.7 ypc) with 6 TD. He transferred to Mississippi St. in the offseason.

QB - Hillstead: 68.6 on 319 snaps, the freshman went 95/159 (59.7%) for 1,065 yards (6.7 ypa) with 11 TD and 8 INT. He transferred to BYU in the offseason.

That is a lot to lose on offense. While there is some experience back on the offensive line, most of the skill position players have moved on.

Now let’s take a look at the defense.

CB - Anyanwu: 55.6 on 851 snaps (2,101 career snaps), Anyanwu had 2 QB pressures, 41 tackles, 5 PBU and 9 missed tackles while giving up 35 catches on 63 targets (55.6%).

LB - Tafisi: 57.0 on 784 snaps (1,450 career snaps), Tafisi had 7 QB pressures, 142 tackles, 7.5 TFL, and 1 PBU with 25 missed tackles.

LB - Switzer: 66.5 on 770 snaps (1,673 career snaps), Switzer had 18 QB pressures, 84 tackles, 8 TFL, 3 sacks, 4 PBU, 1 INT and 13 missed tackles. He transferred to Arkansas in the offseason.

DE - Fitzgerald: 64.9 on 700 snaps, Fitzgerald had 34 QB pressures, 45 tackles, 9 TFL, 8 sacks, and 7 missed tackles. He transferred to Utah in the offseason.

DT - Motu’apuaka: 59.9 on 646 snaps (2,157 career snaps), Motu’apuaka had 25 QB pressures, 32 tackles, 5.5 TFL, 3 sacks, and 9 missed tackles.

S - Dye: 71.4 on 627 snaps, Dye had 81 tackles, 7 PBU, 2 INT, 18 missed tackles and gave up 18 catches on 31 targets (58.1%). He transferred to Kansas in the offseason.

That is six of the seven players who played the most snaps last year, including three of the top four tacklers, and three of the top four in both sacks and TFLs. That is a lot for a program like Utah State to replace.

Canelo Alvarez will put his WBC, WBO and WBA super middleweight world titles on the line against Edgar Berlanga on Saturday, Sept. 14 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) was the undisputed champion at 168 pounds before the IBF stripped him of the belt in July after Alvarez decided to face Berlanga instead of the organization's No. 1 mandatory challenger, William Scull.

The 34-year-old Alvarez has won titles in four divisions, and he's coming off a unanimous decision victory over Jaime Munguia in May. Since his loss to Dmitry Bivol in May 2022 challenging for a light heavyweight title, Alvarez has won four consecutive fights, all by unanimous decisions.

This is a good fight for the fans," Alvarez said during an August news conference in New York to officially announce the fight. "I know he's going to come to bring everything, and I will too. It's the kind of fight I enjoy a lot. I can't wait."

Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs), ranked at No. 5 at super middleweight by ESPN, scored first-round KO wins in his first 16 professional fights. Since then, he has scored just one KO in the past six fights, a sixth-round TKO of Padraig McCrory in February. This is the first title fight for the 27-year-old Berlanga.

"Canelo is definitely going to bring the best out of me," Berlanga said. "Every time I step up, I step up my abilities. This fight is all about intelligence. We have to make sure we match him there. It's will versus will. We're not running. We're going to stay right there and we're going to do what we do."

ISU +2.5 @ #21 Iowa. Total 35, so expected final is 19-16.

CU +7 @ Nebraska. Total 59, so expected final is 33-26.
TTech +2 @ WSU. Total 66, so expected final is 34-32.
MSST +6.5 @ ASU. Total 60, so expected final is 33-27.

There are a couple of lines that make me curious. Arkansas only being a TD dog on the road against OKST and MSST being a TD dog on the road against ASU. I'd bet MSST and OKST in both of those. There might be some value in betting Tulane to cover, as 10 points at home is a pretty big spread, and KSU looked like they had some flaws last week.

The rest of the games are mostly garbage. The only value is betting some of those 4-6 TD underdogs to cover, but I couldn't tell you which ones (although I'd be tempted by USU only because the pig farmer knows how to beat USC).

On the totals, BYU seems high (both teams are runners) and I'd bet ISU/Iowa over, except one of the teams is Iowa. USF/Bama seems high too, I think it may take Bama a little while to get into a groove where they can regularly score 50 with their new HC.

If I had to bet the Utah game, the under feels like the safer bet. I don't think Utah gives up 20, and I think the offense tries to establish the run against Baylor's sub-par DL.

ARTICLE - TAKEAWAYS: No. 11 Utah Wins and Awaits for Hopeful Good News on QB Rising

The Utes avoid a couple injury scares and sneak away with a win over Baylor at home:

INSTANT REACTION: Rising is a vibe. Without him… oh boy

A party atmosphere had the air sucked out of it, just like that.

First off… Whittingham said he that he was told they don’t believe Rising injury is serious. I’ve also heard this through other channels. So as difficult as it is to say, just breathe.

Does that mean that Cam will play against Utah State? I don’t think that they fully need him to, but then Oklahoma State is the following week. The hopeful scenario is that the cut is the worst part of it and that will heal up fast.

I’ve said it time and time again though, the presence and vibe of Rising just elevates the whole team.

I don’t think that it’s time to freak out over Isaac Wilson‘s performance, at all. He was going up against a defensive coordinator that stems from the Utah tree because of Gary Andersen, and so Aranda knew to throw stunts and blitzes and throw Wilson off with a bunch of pre-snap movement. Utah will go into the next week with two game plans and they can afford to do so with it being Utah State. Because of this if Isaac does have to go, they will have a better game plan set up for him to be successful.

The good news out of the office today is that Mike Mitchell escaped serious injury and looked good after getting back in the game and also Micah Bernard showed that he can get to the 20 carry mark and be a dangerous feature back.

Utah’s defense was absolutely ferocious at first and then just like the offense and just like the crowd, the energy was sucked right out of them when Cam went out. There was an adjustment. But for the most part, you’ve got to be happy with their performance against a good dual threat quarterback. Connor O’Toole and Van Fillinger might be turning into the best defensive end combo in the entire country. Crazy thing is, Logan Fano was looking elite before his injury last year and he’s closer and closer to 100%.

Kicking is a concern, and the offensive line is a concern.

More thoughts later, but let’s hear from everyone else.
