That was a crazy back and forth. There were rumors that Arbuckle would be willing to coach for Scalley but unsure of coaching for Whittingham due to OC track record outside of Ludwig. What makes it even more interesting is that I’ve been told that Whittingham’s inner circle has expected him to retire, but he’s torn suddenly and the competitor in him wants to stay, so he’s still been undecided.
I’ve had a former P5 coach who hasn’t worked at Utah tell me that Utah might have dodged a bad one. He’s not high on Arbuckle and also feels like it’s a bad fit for Oklahoma.
So what next? Utah has to kick the tires more on guys like Herman and Mullen. I’d put Mack Leftwich from Texas State and previously Incarnate Word, as the must-get now. Brennan Marion could be more attainable now that Florida State went the unconventional route on their OC hire. I still think Leftwich is the better choice because he’d likely stay at Utah longer. One name that has been pushed a bunch today to me is former BYU player and coach, Jason Beck. I was going to initially include him on the hot list because he has been successful at New Mexico, but he feels like deep down the bench option. Therefore, Utah will have to be told no a bunch of times, if it ends up being him.
If they can’t get Leftwich, they really need to convince either Mullen or Herman on a short term stop before they go the HC route again.
Stay tuned…
