The quest to become Europe’s elite soccer team continues on Thursday with a match between Austria and Serbia at Stadium Rajko Mitić in Belgrade. The Serbians have not played a match since November when they took on Denmark, a game that ended in a 0-0 draw. The team enters the match with six points in League A Group 4 for a spot in third place in the standings. Spain leads with 16 points, Denmark is in second with eight points and Switzerland is at the bottom with just two points. Against Denmark, the squad produced 22 total shots to Denmark’s eight, but was unable to put one in the back of the net to move ahead in the standings. Serbia will look to bring that same level of play into Thursday’s match to hand Austria a loss.

Austria currently sits in the second position in the League B Group 3 standings with three wins, two draws and one loss for a total of 11 points. The team trails first place Norway by just two points. Austria’s most recent match was played against Slovenia back in November and resulted in a 1-1 draw. Romano Schmid scored the team’s lone goal after receiving service from Christoph Baumgartner, finishing to put his team up 1-0 in the 27th minute. The scoreline remained until the 81st minute when Slovenia was able to score the game-tying goal. Austria finished the game with 22 shots and had five quality chances, but were unable to finish, only earning one point instead of three.

Austria and Serbia last met in June and the game went in Austria’s favor with a 2-1 victory. Tune in for the first leg of play on Thursday before the teams meet again on Sunday for the second leg.
