Finland struck first midway through the first period as Henri Jokiharju beat Connor Hellebuyck from a tight angle. Minutes later, the U.S. tied the game when Brady Tkachuk whiffed on a shot but knocked his miss off Juuse Saros and into the net. Team USA then took its first lead late in the second period as Brock Faber fired a shot from the blue line that Minnesota Wild teammate Matt Boldy tipped down and past Saros into the back of the net.
Fifteen seconds into the third period, the United States extended their lead as Matthew Tkachuk launched a wrister from the blue line that was deflected by Niko Mikkola, beating Saros. Just 11 seconds later, Team USA scored a fourth goal as Jake Guentzel fired home on a 3-on-2 rush. Brady Tkachuk tacked on his second goal of the night just over two minutes later as the rout was on. Matthew Tkachuk later tapped in a rebound for the United States' sixth goal with just under nine minutes remaining, providing an exclamation point on a statement night for this generation of U.S. hockey stars (and the Tkachuk brothers).
There will be no NHL All-Star game this season. In its place, the league is holding the 4 Nations Face-Off, a week-long international best-on-best tournament with players representing the USA, Canada, Sweden and Finland. Each team will play the other three teams in a round-robin format, and then the top two teams will meet in a one-game championship game.
Canada topped Sweden in overtime last night to open the tournament, with Mitch Marner netting the game winner on a feed from Sidney Crosby, his third assist of the night. Up next are the US and Finland tonight at 8 p.m. (5 p.m. PT) on ESPN and ESPN Plus.

The 4 Nations Face-Off tournament will take place in Boston and Montreal.
