I'll first start this off by saying, multiple sources I highly trust are telling me that McLaughlin will be committing to Oregon State, tomorrow. Being close to family and a coaching connection are key reasons. Now for the don't freak out, don't jump off a ledge news... McLaughlin was courted by the Utes starting this summer, the Beavers had a much longer relationship with him. Why do I say this? Relationship building matters and there's a lot more to an evaluation process than just seeing a kid, liking a kid, and offering. The coaches do in-depth research while building those relationships and seeing how those kids act in their surrounding. They'll take high character kids with upside before they take elite talent with personality issues. There could be one highly touted kid they've been evaluating, that falls into that latter category (it's basically a constant interview from both parties, during the process).
I still stand by what I've said, I feel strongly that the Utes land at least two of: Jayce Johnson, Mitch Lightfoot, Devon Daniels, Lauri Markkanen. This happens and it's one helluva recruiting class.
When official word gets out on McLaughlin tomorrow, it's important to remember that point guard is not a priority, this year. I've been told by my sources that both Isaiah Wright and Lorenzo Bonam have impressed in summer workouts. Bonam won't be as cerebral as Delon, but he's faster, and has "plus" attributes for the position. I'll talk about any other point guard options, when the time is right. As for now, there is a few I'll be following.
The 2015-16 offense--no surprise will be centered around Jakob. Still, don't expect him to average 20+ due to the double-teams he's going to face every night.Something that is being prepared for, already. The one guy very capable of leading the team in scoring, is Gabe Bealer, but it's important to temper expectations with him as he learns the system. He could be your conference season breakout candidate, if not earlier than that.
Both Chapman and Kuzma have continued to impressed, as I've mentioned previously. I'm told Chapman has improved his shot and Kuzma is expected to be a matchup nightmare this year, after last year's growing pains. For those that missed what I said about Kuzma previously, the offense needs to be simplified for him--basically he just needs to be able to not think too much, go out and ball.
Really, when it comes to recruiting I just want to preach patience. Good news will come and you guys will get the best breakdown of the eventual commit(s) recruitment, right here. I'm really liking what's in the works.
