Today, the NAACP announced that BET Media Group will receive the esteemed NAACP Founders Award at the 56th NAACP Image Awards. The award recognizes BET Media Group's 45-year legacy of amplifying Black culture and championing authentic storytelling. It will be presented during the live broadcast on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 8:00 PM ET/PT on BET and CBS.
From its inception, BET was built on the bold vision of creating a space where Black voices could be seen, heard, and celebrated. But being the first cable network for Black audiences was only the beginning. What started as a television channel has grown into a multi-media powerhouse—an undeniable pillar of the Black community thriving at the intersection of content, culture, and community. Over the past 45 years, BET’s mission has expanded beyond representation to actively shape culture, inspire progress, and create new opportunities that empower the next generation of changemakers. Never resting on being first, BET continues to push boundaries, amplify Black culture, and drive impact that extends far beyond entertainment—cementing a legacy of influence, advocacy, and lasting change.
Launched in 1980 by Founders Bob and Shelia Johnson, BET quickly became a pioneering force, ensuring Black representation in media when it was scarce. Under Debra Lee’s leadership, the network expanded its global footprint, introducing hit series like The Game and Being Mary Jane while cementing its status as the premier platform for Black storytelling. Today, under Scott Mills' leadership, BET has transformed into a multi-platform media powerhouse, spanning television, streaming, digital, live events, and international markets.
Beyond entertainment, BET has been at the forefront of advocacy. Leading relief efforts through the BET Saving Our Selves (SOS) platform for Haiti, Hurricane Katrina, COVID-19, and, most recently, supporting the historically Black community in Altadena following the California wildfires with the Altadena Community Preservation Fund in partnership with NAACP, WME & JSSK.
“The Founder’s Award honors those who dare to dream beyond limits and turn vision into reality. For more than four decades, BET has been an innovator of culture, creating space for our community to see themselves recognized on-screen and inspiring generations to believe that their dreams are within reach,” said Derrick Johnson, NAACP President and CEO. “BET has redefined media by championing bold storytelling, celebrating unforgettable music, and delivering groundbreaking moments that resonate with audiences worldwide. Through their undeniable leadership in the entertainment industry, BET has continuously pushed boundaries and set new standards for others to follow in their path.”
The NAACP Founders Award is presented to the one who took the risk to be the first—and sometimes at all costs—believing and demonstrating that the unattainable is indeed attainable. It is presented to the one who dared to dream, have a vision, and see it through to fruition, now the creator and innovator who leaves a legacy of generational impact and change for a people and a nation. Previous honorees of this award include Toni Vaz, the founder of the “NAACP Image Awards,” and Garth Brooks.
Winners will be revealed during the “56th NAACP Image Awards'' telecast on Saturday, February 22, live from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium at 8:00 PM ET/PT on BET and CBS. This year, the broadcast will be extended 30 minutes to 2.5 hours.
Globally recognized as one of the most distinguished multicultural awards shows, the “56th NAACP Image Awards” will continue a tradition of excellence, uplifting values that inspire equality, justice, and progressive change, and highlighting artists committed to that purpose.
One of the most iconic annual celebrations of Black excellence, the NAACP Image Awards draws the biggest and brightest stars in Hollywood. Previous years' attendees and winners include Ava DuVernay, Gabrielle Union, Dwayne Wade, Courtney B. Vance, Sherri Shepherd, Colman Domingo, Mike Epps, Keke Palmer, Taraji P. Henson, Fantasia, Danielle Brooks, Usher, Tyler Perry, Angela Bassett, Damson Idris, Michelle Buteau, Victoria Monét, Viola Davis, Beyoncé, Nicco Annan, Ruth E.
