Daevon Vigilant
Athlete
Downey (Calf.) High School
Three Stars
Rankings: #89 player in California
Offers: Utah, Michigan, Washington State, Colorado, Navy, Army, San Diego State, Nevada, New Mexico, San Jose State
Recruiting Coach: Sharrieff Shah

Breakdown:
Vigilant reportedly committed to Utah following the team's satellite camp in Southern California on Friday. The commitment came as a bit of a surprise, since Vigilant had said in previous interviews that he wasn't planning on making a decision until January.

Vigilant isn't entirely unfamiliar with Utah. He took an unofficial visit to Salt Lake City during spring football and was able to see the campus and facilities while meeting members of the team. (He visited with fellow commit Davir Hamilton). The satellite camp offered another opportunity to get to know the Utah coaches' style.

Although he's primarily a running back in high school, Vigilant has the speed and athleticism to play both running back and corner at the next level. On offense, Vigilant was one of the top backs in California as a junior. He rushed for over 1800 yards and 12 TD, averaging more than eight yards per carry.

At 5-foot-7 inches, 180 pounds, Vigilant is similar in stature to current Ute back Troy McCormick. On film, Vigilant has excellent football speed and is routinely able to run away from defenders. He's more of a speed back that does better when he has the ball in space than a prototypical power back that thrives between the tackles. If running back isn't in his future, Vigilant has the speed, size and athleticism that could translate nicely to nickel back in Utah's defense. However, offense seems the most likely destination for Vigilant at this point.

How It Impacts the Class: Vigilant is the second running back to commit to the program for the class of 2016, along with JUCO back Thomas McDonald. The Utes were looking to take a high school back, and Vigilant gives them a speedy change of pace option for the backfield.

We'll have more on Vigilant when we speak to him about his commitment.
