Utah's first scrimmage of spring ball is in the books and it was a pretty even affair between the offense and defense. Here is who and what stood out:
1) Jason Thompson made it clear today he was out to win a job after he rung Delshawn McClellon's bell to start the scrimmage. Later on Travis Wilson tried hitting Tyrone Smith for a touchdown and Thompson denied the play with a beautiful pass break up. Thompson is a very physical kid but most importantly he knows how to think like a quarterback which makes him a deadly weapon to have on defense.
2) Kenneth Scott is a difference maker for Utah's offense much like running back Devontae Booker. While not played a ton today he made the most of every opportunity given to him coming down with 3 catches for 36 yards and a touchdown which led the wide receivers for the day. He also had a nice play where he bobbed and weaved his way for more yards after catch. The rest of the group needs to take notes on what Scott does and shadow him like their lives depend on it.
3) Pita Taumoepenu might be one of the most fun players to watch on Utah's defense right now. He's tenacious and vicious when it comes to getting after the quarterbacks. I've personally lost track of how many fumbled balls he's recovered through out the course of spring ball. Today he popped Hansen for a loss recording one sack and one tackle for a loss of four yards.
4) People have been anxiously awaiting linebacker Uaea Masina to make a comeback and today he delivered. He was disruptive and all over the place making plays it seemed like. On the day he recorded one tackle for a loss of 6 yards. It's still early but it's nice to see him coming back to his old form.
Other stats worth noting:
Travis Wilson and Chase Hansen were pretty comparable today stats wise with Wilson completing 10 of 19 passes and one touchdown. Hansen was 9 of 20 for no touchdowns.
Bubba Poole had a chance to play both running back and wide receiver today. At running back he had five carries for 13 net yards and his longest rush was for nine yards. Poole had two catches for 17 total yards as a receiver.
Tani Leha'uli also had a respectable day playing running back. Leha'uli rushed seven times for 19 net yards with his longest being seven yards.
Defensively Dominique Hatfield and Brian Allen recorded a pass break up and piece. Sunia Tauteoli was a maniac recording three tackles for a loss as well as a blocked field goal.
Andre Godfrey, Jared Norris and Hunter Dimick also recorded a tackle for loss.
