Another day and no hire. Utah expected to have this done already and they expected it to be Arbuckle. Whittingham deserves to retire when he’s ready, but because he hasn’t had an answer on what he wants to do yet, Arbuckle’s final decision to go to Oklahoma was made easier. He would have been a Scalley hire and not all coaches believe they’ll fit with every coach — if that makes sense. Again, there is a coach I highly respect in the industry (non-Utah related) that believes Arbuckle turning Utah down is a good thing for Utah, even though he was the hot name in college football.

The two they’re targeting right now are Mack Leftwich (spread, Scalley) and Brennan Marion (run-heavy but effective, Whittingham). There were some higher profile openings that Marion was tied to that passed him over. Therefore he’s very in play for Utah.

It can be complicating that both Whittingham and Scalley have two different offensive visions, but again, Whittingham deserves to leave when he’s content with leaving. Because of this he’s going go to with what he’s comfortable with going with.

Hopefully there’s clarity soon.
