Canadian football fans, the time has come! The 111th Grey Cup takes place Sunday between the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Toronto Argonauts. This will mark the second time in three years that Toronto and Winnipeg will have met in the Grey Cup. The Argonauts toppled the reigning champion Montreal Alouettes 30-28 in the East Division Final last Saturday, but they lost QB Chad Kelly to a broken leg in the process. That leaves seven-year CFL vet Nick Arbuckle as the starter against Winnipeg.

This matchup features two teams coming off strong seasons. The Blue Bombers finished first in the West Division with an 11-7 record, while the Argos placed second in the East Division at 10-8.

The two teams met twice this season, with the Argos winning both. They won the first matchup on July 27 by a 16-14 final and the second on October 11 by a score of 14-11.

Despite winning both regular season matchups, the Argos are heavy underdogs entering this one. Part of that is because they will be without starting quarterback Chad Kelly, who suffered a season-ending leg injury last week. They will instead have Nick Arbuckle under centre, who has just 26 starts over his seven-year CFL career.

While the NFL is in the middle of its season, the CFL season is coming to a close with the 111th Grey Cup on Sunday.

Future Hall of Fame left tackle Stanley Bryant put it succinctly when asked about what quarterback Zach Collaros means to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

As Collaros and the Bombers get ready for their fifth straight Grey Cup appearance in Sunday’s showdown with Toronto, let’s not forget how the season started.

Winnipeg went 0-4 and 2-6 out of the gates. Collaros went without a touchdown pass through his first five games against four interceptions. And the Bombers looked like a shell of their former selves, especially on offence.

But with Collaros at the helm, losing faith was never an option. And now Winnipeg is back on the biggest stage.

Seeing the Blue Bombers stumble out of the gate was notable. People notice when the league’s gold standard for so long looks out of sorts. But instead of panicking or pointing fingers or letting things get off the rails, Winnipeg trusted the process. And trusted the guy.

“You could say (they were struggling) for anybody that was on the team,” Bryant admitted on Friday morning.

“No belief was ever lost with him. We just started off slow, faced adversity, but we overcame that and we got back on track.”

The mark of a good locker room is how they respond when things are tough. And aside from a couple last-minute Grey Cup losses the last two years, things have rarely been hard for the Bombers over the last half decade.

Give them credit: Collaros and Winnipeg’s offence responded the right way.

“We never felt that Zach was off to a slow start,” said red hot receiver Kenny Lawler. “There are a lot of things that go into football and it’s never always on the quarterback as much as he may say, you know, yeah, it’s me.

“It’s not all him. He’s a leader so of course, you know, he might say things like that. It was just an overall team thing that we had to become better.”

INSTANT REACTION: Hunter is special

First I’ll just say, Hunter deserves the Heisman. I thought it would be Jeanty from Boise State, but Hunter’s season is too special to ignore.

The offense took away too long today to get going. The run game was brutal because Colorado was able to key on it. Take away Wilson’s rushing numbers from all the sacks and the Utes had 19 Carrie’s for 50 yards.

The defense, for as good as it was at times, was tough to watch at points, from coverage, to tackling, to allowing Colorado to zig-zag all around the field and get big gains.

Wilson had some nice moments. The staff needs to evaluate the drive where he went I believe 8-8 and the TD, to see how they can get that rhythm and that confidence consistently going. There were moments of really nice passes. Aside from that, three interceptions and one fumble aren’t good at all. Plus getting sacked four times and a handful of TFLs against him, he needs to continue working on processing through his reads better and getting rid of the ball.

Great breakout game from Carsen Ryan today with four receptions for 78 yards. Singer had five for 65 and a TD. As nice as Wilson’s TD pass to Singer was, the early separation Singer got on his route made that possible. It was the first TD pass Hunter had given up all year.

Other than that, let’s hear from everyone.

For UFC’s highly anticipated return to Madison Square Garden, there is no better bout fans could have asked for than Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic. The GOAT of the UFC and New York native Jon Jones has fought just two times in the past five years, winning a light heavyweight title fight against Dominick Reyes in 2020, and coming out of a long absence to seize the heavyweight title from Ciryl Gane at UFC 285 in 2023 with a dramatic guillotine choke finish in the first round.

The UFC is returning to New York’s Madison Square Garden this weekend with UFC 309. At the top of the card is a heavyweight title defense by Jon Jones — arguably the pound-for-pound GOAT in UFC’s history — against former two-time champion Stipe Miocic. We’ll also see Charles Oliveira vs. Michael Chandler in a co-main fight, and Bo Nickal vs. Paul Craig in a middleweight clash.

This time, Jones (27-1-1), defends that title against the legendary former two-time champion, Stipe Miocic (20-4). Miocic is widely regarded as the greatest UFC Heavyweight of all time, boasting four title defenses. With both fighters having hinted that this could be their final bout, it is an absolute must-watch for UFC fans around the world.

Jones time outside the ring has been eventful, appearing in an Albuquerque court earlier this year to fight charges, after he was accused of becoming hostile during a drug test at his New Mexico home. Jones pleaded not guilty, and completed a required four hours of anger management over the incident.

A pair of MMA luminaries return to action on the biggest stage this Saturday, as Jon Jones defends his heavyweight throne against Stipe Miocic at UFC 309’s headliner at Madison Square Garden. Our UFC 309 predictions come mere hours before fight night, with Jones and Miocic ending layoffs of 20 months and three-plus years, respectively.

UFC fans in Mexico will be able to follow all the fights on the UFC 309 card through FOX Sports Premium. The main event between Jones and Miocic would begin at 9:00 p.m. Central Mexico Time (CST). On the other hand, in the United States you will have to subscribe to ESPN+ to watch the main event starting at 10 pm ET (Eastern US time).

The big news here is the long-awaited return of Jon Jones, one of the greatest fighters in the history of the sport, making his first start back in the octagon in 20 months as he faces Stipe Miocic for the heavyweight championship in the main event.

Jones was slated to defend his UFC heavyweight title against Miocic during UFC 295 at MSG this time last year, but the fight had to be pushed back after Jones suffered a torn pectoral tendon leading up to the fight that required surgery.

The main event will see Jon Jones attempt to defend his heavyweight belt for the first time against former two-time titleholder Stipe Miocic, who is returning to the cage for the first time since 2021.
