Women’s Sweep 16 Preview: Team Rachel Homan vs. Team Gabby Wood

One of the most anticipated matchups of the women’s Sweep 16 will be Team Rachel Homan taking on Team Gabby Wood. Team Homan, the reigning champions of the PointsBet Invitational, Scotties Tournament of Hearts, and World Women’s Curling Championship, returns to familiar ice, having claimed the 2024 Scotties Tournament title in February. As the top-seeded team in the women’s bracket, Homan’s squad is set to face No. 16-seeded Team Gabby Wood from Edmonton, the reigning champions of the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA).

Homan’s team is no stranger to the pressures of high-level competition and enters this matchup as strong favorites. However, Team Gabby Wood will be eager to challenge the defending champions, having earned their spot by triumphing at the CCAA Championship.
Men’s Sweep 16 Preview: Team Reid Carruthers and Team Brad Gushue Set to Battle for Glory

On the men’s side, all eyes will be on Team Reid Carruthers of Winnipeg, the two-time defending PointsBet Invitational champions. Carruthers, seeded sixth, begins his journey to a potential three-peat on Thursday night, squaring off against No. 11-seeded Team Félix Asselin from Montreal. With a proven track record of success at this event, Carruthers’ team will be a force to reckon with.

Meanwhile, top-seeded Team Brad Gushue from St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, will take to the ice on Wednesday night against No. 16-seeded Team Dan Sherrard, the reigning champions of the Everest Canadian Club Championships. Gushue’s team has consistently performed at the highest levels of curling and will look to demonstrate their dominance once again in this tournament.

Leading the field to Calgary will be Team Rachel Homan of Ottawa, who won the Scotties Tournament of Hearts at the WinSport Event Centre in February and followed up by winning gold at the 2024 BKT Tires World Women’s Curling Championship in Sydney, N.S. — an amazing season that was kicked off by winning the 2023 PointsBet Invitational in Oakville, Ont.

On the men’s side, 2024 Montana’s Brier champions and world championship silver-medallists Team Brad Gushue of St. John’s, N.L., will arrive in Calgary as the top seed.

Also in the field is two-time defending PointsBet Invitational men’s champion Team Reid Carruthers of Winnipeg.

The PointsBet Invitational once again features 16 women’s team and 16 men’s team from all different levels of curling across Canada competing in a March Madness-style, single-elimination tournament.

Matt takes a look at the upcoming Homecoming game against Arizona:

• Thought the guys on defense played really well other than the let down at the end of the game. Up to that point he felt they were playing solid defense and gap sound, especially upfront.

• With Karene out with an injury, moving Jonathan Hall from safety to linebacker helped fill that void. It was also getting all the new guys on the same page since they shuffled around without Reid. Feels like they’ve done a good job over the last couple of games with those changes.

• Hall has done really well with the position transition, noted that a lot his skills, speed and athleticism carries well over to the linebacker position.

• Stated they are a good team and they knew what they were capable of, just needed to work on areas that they had some holes to improve on in their technique and responsibilities. Believes it showed against Oklahoma State.

• Their goal is to improve every week and continue to progress, because it will never be over.

• Changed a lot of things he felt he wasn’t doing right in technique and the biggest thing was getting fully healthy to come back.

• Not too much mentioned regarding the QB situation - mostly hypotheticals if Isaac gets the start and another quarterback is needed to step in for reps. Whittingham expressed that decision to be determined on how guys are health wise.

• First real practice today, yesterday was walk through and conditioning. Felt that practice went well and noted the guys looked sharp.

- Scouting Arizona from last year

• Noted different coaching staff, not the same offense or defense they played last year. Mentioned they have a really good quarterback and receivers, coining them as weapons for their success.

• Rabbit Evans: Has a lot of upside and they’re confident in him, he’s just not quite assignment sound enough yet to see extensive playing time. Still a work in progress in running the system where there is a steep learning curve to their safeties and linebacker system.

• Alaka’i Gilman: playing well and very reliable. Says he’s extremely intelligent, joked “he’s a Stanford guy, says it all, right?”
