The 60th Joe Weider’s Fitness and Performance Olympia Weekend is here from October 10-13 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mass monsters from the Men’s Open Bodybuilding class met on Friday evening for prejudging inside the Las Vegas Convention Center. Samson Dauda, Derek Lunsford, and Hadi Choopan are leading as we head into Day 2 Saturday!

With this historic anniversary upon us, competitors were eager to shock the world in hopes of claiming the sport’s most coveted title. In 2023, Derek Lunsford made history after defeating Hadi Choopan and Samson Dauda to become the first two-division Mr. Olympia in bodybuilding.

Samson Dauda‘s fullness and freak factor were impossible to overlook during prejudging. He appeared confident, in control of his abs, and shocked the audience with major improvements to his back, traps, shoulders, and arms. Derek Lunsford also brought a tremendous look and stood out with density thanks to his signature back double biceps pose.

In addition, Hadi Choopan commanded the stage and held his own throughout this first portion of this competition, showcasing a striated chest. There is certainly some mystery surrounding who will walk away victorious on Day Two Saturday night, however, Choopan was in the center as tonight’s show wrapped up.

Derek Lunsford made bodybuilding history last year, flexing his way to the 2023 Mr. Olympia title.

It was a coronation of sorts for Lunsford, a 5-6, 225-pound tour de force who is the only man to capture the tournament's top prize in both Mr. Olympia and 212 Mr. Olympia (2021).

He's one of a cadre of talents hoping to make similar inroads in the competition come 2024. The annual event, a staple of the bodybuilding calendar, returns to the fore starting Thursday, Oct. 10.

Lunsford will have to fight off stiff competition from the likes of Hadi Choopan, Samson Dauda and other members of the bodybuilding elite. If he can retain his title as the world's best muscle flexer at 225 pounds, Lunsford could join the likes of Ronnie Coleman, Lee Haney and Arnold Schwarzenegger as back-to-back winners in the famous event.

In the world of bodybuilding, the Classic Physique category has gained increasing prominence, largely due to two standout figures: Chris Bumstead, known as CBum, and Brazil’s Ramon Dino, who has consistently challenged Bumstead’s dominance at Mr. Olympia. As the 2024 edition approaches, anticipation builds for another intense showdown between these two giants battling for the title.

Chris Bumstead: the undefeated five-time champion

Chris Bumstead, now 29 years old, has been the dominant face of Classic Physique since 2019, securing five consecutive Mr. Olympia titles. Recognized for his unique combination of symmetry, muscle size, and impeccable definition, CBum has been virtually unbeatable in recent years. His consistency and physical quality make him the favorite once again for the 2024 edition.

However, 2024 presents new challenges for the champion. Despite his success, Bumstead has faced injuries and personal changes that have led him to adjust his training and focus. In recent interviews, he acknowledged the rising threats in his category but remains confident that competitors like Ramon Dino still have more to prove if they wish to dethrone him.

Ramon Dino: the Brazilian challenger

Ramon Rocha Queiroz, popularly known as Ramon Dino, has become one of the brightest prospects in global bodybuilding, especially among Brazilian fans. After finishing second in both the 2022 and 2023 Mr. Olympia editions, Ramon has proven to be a genuine threat to CBum’s reign. With a physique that combines size and definition, coupled with impeccable posing, Dino has impressed both judges and fans around the world.

Ramon’s rise in bodybuilding gained major attention after his 2023 Arnold Classic victory, where he showed that he could compete on equal footing with the top names in Classic Physique. Although Bumstead maintained his supremacy at Mr. Olympia, Dino’s performance was enough to raise questions about how long CBum can keep his crown.

The 2024 Mr. Olympia competition

Mr. Olympia 2024 will take place in Las Vegas from October 10 to 13, and the Classic Physique competition is one of the most anticipated events. Once again, the focus will be on the rivalry between Bumstead and Ramon Dino. The competition promises to be fierce, with both athletes striving for perfection in every detail, from physical preparation to posing routines.

While Bumstead seeks his sixth consecutive title, Ramon has been working to close the gaps that separated him from the champion in previous editions. Both have shown mutual respect, recognizing each other’s skills, but neither hides their determination to win. Dino recently commented on making significant adjustments to his diet and training to come in even stronger for this edition, while Bumstead has confidently stated that he doesn’t feel any real threat to his title, despite the rising talent in the category.

Other competitors to watch

Though the rivalry between CBum and Ramon Dino is the main attraction of the category, other bodybuilders are also preparing to challenge these two giants. Among them is German athlete Urs Kalecinski, who placed third in both the 2022 and 2023 editions. Kalecinski is known for his incredible muscle definition and consistent stage presence, making him a potential contender.

Another notable name is Wesley Vissers, the 2024 Arnold Classic winner. He has been refining his physique with each competition and aims to climb the ranks at Mr. Olympia. Known for his classic aesthetics, Vissers’ recent Arnold Classic victory signals that he’s in excellent form to compete against the best.

Intense preparation for Mr. Olympia

As the event draws closer, both Bumstead and Dino have ramped up their training regimens. Bumstead, who recently underwent surgery after a bicep injury, has adapted his training to ensure he’s in peak condition for Mr. Olympia. He has shared parts of his preparation on social media, showing high-intensity routines focused on maintaining his lead in the sport.

Ramon Dino, on the other hand, has been following a strict training and diet schedule, aiming to increase his muscle mass while maintaining the definition that has made him famous. His 2023 Arnold Classic performance showed that he is on the right path, but he still needs to address the minor details that kept him behind Bumstead in previous Mr. Olympia editions.

Expectations for the future of Classic Physique

Regardless of the outcome of Mr. Olympia 2024, the future of the Classic Physique category looks promising with the ongoing rivalry between Bumstead and Ramon Dino. This competition has elevated the level of the sport and drawn more attention to the category, establishing it as one of the most exciting in the bodybuilding world.

Fans eagerly await to see whether Dino can finally dethrone Bumstead or if the Canadian will continue expanding his legacy with yet another title. The answer will be revealed on the Mr. Olympia stage, but one thing is certain: this will be one of the most thrilling competitions in recent bodybuilding history.
