As the Utah coaching staff makes its final push toward signing day, UteZone takes a look at the recruiting for each of the position groups. Today, we examine the wide receivers. As always, before we talk about the incoming class, it’s important to take a look at the players that are expected to return to the program next year.

Here’s a breakdown of which players are expected to participate in spring football:

Returning Scholarship Players:
Tim Patrick (SR)*
Cory Butler-Byrd (SR)**
Delshawn McClellon (SR)
Kenric Young (JR)
Kyle Fulks (JR)
Jameson Field (JR)
Caleb Repp (SO)
Raelon Singleton (SO)
Tyrone Smith (SO)
Siaosi Wilson (rFR)
*Needs to be awarded extra year of eligibility. Awaiting decision from NCAA.
**Plays both cornerback and wide receiver

Incoming Commits:
Demari Simpkins (FR)*
Alec Dana (SO)**
R.J. Hubert (Sign and Send)
*Early enrollee. Will participate in spring football.
**Possible participant in spring football. Still needs to complete academic requirements.

What’s Next:
From a scholarship numbers standpoint, wide receiver isn’t a big need. The Utes typically try to carry roughly 10 scholarship receivers on the roster, and could enter spring football with as many as 12. There are some caveats to that number. Tim Patrick will still need to get a waiver from the NCAA to get an extra year of eligibility. Cory Butler-Byrd could potentially make a permanent move to receiver from cornerback, although it’s more likely at this point that he’ll be pulling double duty again this season. Caleb Repp spent much of his freshman year at tight end, but is likely to be moved back to outside receiver on a permanent basis this spring.

On the recruiting front, Utah already has commitments from receivers Demari Simpkins and Alec Dana. Simpkins is an early enrollee that will join high school teammate Tyler Huntley on campus this spring. Dana is a JUCO transfer with three years to play three. There’s still an outside chance that he can finish his academic requirements in time to enroll for the second session of spring semester and participate in spring football, but that hasn’t been finalized just yet.

The Utes are still looking at a few receivers, but any focus from this point forward will be more on upgrading the overall talent to the position group rather than just bringing numbers in. JUCO receiver Jonah Trinnaman (BYU commit) would still be a prize, and the Utes will continue to try to flip him, although their chances remain slim. There are a few receivers committed to other programs that the Utes may try to bring in on officials as well, and there’s an outside chance they may try to bring in another JUCO wideout. That said, most of the focus on skill position recruiting will be at cornerback.
