SAN FRANCISCO – The Utah men’s basketball team was picked to finish 10th in the recently released Pac-12 Men’s Basketball Preseason Media Poll as voted on by the league’s media.
This is just the third time the Runnin’ Utes have been predicted to finish between 10th and 12th since joining the league. The two other times the Utes were picked to finish beyond ninth was in 2011-12 and 2012-13 – Utah’s first two seasons in the Pac-12.
Heading into its 11th season as a member of the Pac-12 Conference, Utah has exceeded the polls every year besides the 2014-15 (2nd) and 2020-21 (8th) campaigns when it finished exactly where it was predicted to in the preseason media poll.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Craig Smith, the 2021-22 Runnin’ Utes roster features eight newcomers this season – including a familiar face returning in Both Gachafter spending the 2020-21 season back home at Minnesota. Joining the seven returners andGach are David Jenkins Jr. (South Dakota State/UNLV), Bostyn Holt (Coffeyville CC), Marco Anthony (Virginia/Utah State), Lazar Stefanović (Portska Gimnazija), DušanMahorčič (Lewis/Mobley Area CC/Illinois State), Rollie Worster (Utah State) and Gabe Madsen (Cincinnati).
UCLA, who had a magical run to the Final Four last season, was nearly the unanimous pick to win the Pac-12 for the second-straight year. The Bruins received 32-of-34 first-place votes after returning all five starters and every contributor from last year’s run.
Oregon, who has won the last two regular-seasons, was picked to finish second with two first-place votes while USC, an Elite Eight participant last season, checked in at No. 3 in the poll. With long-time Gonzaga assistant Tommy Lloyd taking over the helm at Arizona, the Wildcats tied with Oregon State to finish fourth. The Beavers got hot late last season and won the Pac-12 Tournament crown enroute to an Elite Eight appearance.
Colorado leads the second half of the group at No. 6 while Arizona State, Washington State, Stanford, Utah, Washington and California round out the bottom half of the league’s preseason media poll.
