If Oregon & Wash go to the Big 12, Big 12 Doesn't Expand and the Pac 12 Collapses, Utah is Toast?

The latest from CBS Sports (Dennis Dodd) and around college football.

“Oregon and Washington might be next with a jump to the Big Ten likely at least a consideration. That conjures the cringeworthy prospect of some Pac-12 schools then having to join the Mountain West to find a home.”

“For now, there is no interest from the Big 12 to take any Pac-12 schools. When a chance presented itself Thursday for the Big 12 board of directors to discuss these developments, one high-ranking Big 12 official said, "Why?"

The ACC could expand, adding a West division (of Pac12 schools) but they haven't shown any indication to expand.

Let’s assume that all of the above is true. Plus the Big10/SEC settle on 16 teams each at least for the time being.

College Football would be structured as….

Tier 1
Big10 & SEC (and they get most of the money and almost all the power)

Tier 2
Big12, ACC, Pac12 (see below)

Tier 3
MWC, MAC, WAC etc

*Tier 3 schools fall further behind.
*Do Tier 2 schools even get a shot at the Playoffs?
*Even with a 12-team playoff, the Tier 1 schools might get all of the 12 spots.

Now consider…..The remaining PAC12 schools don’t have the option to join the Big12 (based on Dennis Dodds reporting) and Big12 teams won’t leave for the ’new’ Pac12.

Utah & Pac 12’s Future…

Option #1
Invite San Diego State and Boise State to the Pac12. The new Pac12 is a Tier 2 school and making noticeably less money than they currently do. But at least the conference is intact.

Option #2
The Pac12 folds/disbands. This is the new CFB world. It could happen. What would be Utah’s options? Rejoin the Mountain West??? Any other options? I don’t see any.

Wow, option #2 would be devastating for Utah, Stanford, Cal, Arizona, ASU etc. They would go from having a long shot of being part of the Big 10 expansion all the way down to the MWC.

You can bet the remaining Pac12 teams are scrambling to hold the PAC12 together. It's do or die for the Pac12.
