Why gambling on your own team is dumb or why I love Chase Hansen.

Late last night with the Utes leading 10-6, it was obvious that a single first down would ice the game. NIU was using all of its timeouts — and my wager of Utah -10.5 was doomed.

But then our inept offense bailed me out by not getting that first down! There was a chance to cover with a pick six or scoop and score. So in my own perverse way, I wasn’t upset we had to punt with under three minutes to play.

And then Chase came through with the exact thing that I needed and there was much joy and rejoicing in my home.

I felt dirty about hoping for a 3-and-out by the offense hoping for the unlikely event of a defensive score. It worked this time, but the morale to the story is DON’T GAMBLE ON YOUR OWN TEAM. It’s a lesson I’ve learned dozens of times. I won’t make that mistake again.

Well, at least for a couple of days. Speaking of which, has anyone seen the line on the Washington game?
