Utes Named Tom Hansen Conference Medal Recipients

SAN FRANCISCO – Utah football player Hunter Dimick and softball player Hannah Flippen were announced today as recipients of the prestigious Pac-12 Tom Hansen Conference Medal. The Tom Hansen Conference Medal is awarded annually to each Pac-12’s member institution’s outstanding senior male and female student-athlete based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership.

Conference medal winners have been named every year since the 1960-61 academic year. On Thursday, June 29 at 8:00 p.m. MT, Pac-12 Networks will feature the Tom Hansen Conference Medal winners on its year-end Sports Report, a one-hour special honoring the 24 recipients of the prestigious award.

Dimick, currently a under a free agent contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars, earned All-America and first-team All-Pac-12 honors as a senior after a standout career as a four-year starting defensive end. He graduated as Utah’s career record-holder for sacks (29.5) and his 44.5 career tackles for loss ranks third all-time at Utah. A team captain, Dimick was a 2016 second-team All-American by Walter Camp and the Football Writers Association of America while earning third-team honors from the Associated Press. The Ted Hendricks Award finalist and Bednarik Award semifinalist led the Pac-12 and ranked third in the nation in sacks (14.5) and sacks per game (1.12). He also led the Pac-12 in tackles for loss (20.0). Dimick was named the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week and Pac-12 Player of the Week after tying the Pac-12 record and setting a school record for sacks in a game (5.0) against Arizona State.

A 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-American, Dimick earned a degree in communication. He was also a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree and four-time Pac-12 All-Academic selection (twice making the first team).

Flippen earned first-team All-America honors from the NFCA in 2017 to become Utah’s first three-time softball All-American. A two-time Pac-12 Player of the Year, Flippen led the Pac-12 in 2017 in batting average (.424) and on-base percentage (.513), while ranking second in the league in slugging percentage (.728). Also in 2017, Flippen became the first player in Pac-12 history to win Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season. She holds Utah school career records for runs scored and batting average.

Flippen is a two-time Academic All-American (earning first-team honors as a junior) and earned a degree from Utah in Human Development and Family Studies and Psychology. She is also a three-time Pac-12 All-Academic selection.

Flippen was drafted by the ScrapYard Dawgs of the National Pro Fastpitch League and plans to return to Utah in the fall to pursue her master’s degree on a Pac-12 postgraduate scholarship.
