With spring ball out of the way, Utah coaches have turned their attention to recruiting. We're in the early stages of the spring evaluation period, and Ute coaches are out on the road this week taking a closer look at prospects with offers and evaluating new prospects as well. Here's a breakdown of where coaches are this week:
Justin Ena - Arizona
Jim Harding - Northern California
Morgan Scalley - Texas
Lewis Powell - Spent the first half of the week in So Cal, and is now off to Hawaii
Aaron Roderick - Southern California
Sharrieff Shah - So Cal
Dennis Erickson and Taylor Stubblefield are holding down the fort in SLC this week, but will be on the road next week. Erickson will of course be in Florida and Stubblefield is expected to split his time between Louisiana and Southern California.
There has also been an interesting rule change from previous years. It used to be that only seven coaches could go out on the road at any one time. That has now changed to a system that tracks the number of days coaches spend recruiting. Now the staff can send out all nine coaches to recruit at once, but they're limited to 168 days in total to split up between them. As a result, they need to be strategic about how many days each coach gets to recruit and where they'll spend their time. When the recruiting period opened up on the 15th, all nine Utah coaches once again blitzed the state of Utah. They visited 65 different schools throughout the day.
With so many coaches on the road, look for a lot more offers going out over the next few weeks. I'm not certain that we'll see immediate commitments out of it, but this is a valuable time for coaches to forge valuable relationships.
