Hey guys, here's a summary of what Troy Taylor had to say after today's practice.

  • No question that Huntley has improved. He's more comfortable in the system, he's throwing the ball more accurately, he understands the system and gets people lined up correctly. He's a hard worker, and hungry.
  • Taylor is confident in the receiver group, says they're a lot deeper than they were last year, more experienced in the system, and adding Covey is a great help. The depth is nice, but they also need guys at the top who can make plays, and he mentioned Covey as a guy who fits that description.
  • Taylor has never dealt with returned missionaries before, but had heard that some guys come back with "mission legs", but that hasn't been a concern with Covey at all.
  • The backup QB spot is day-to-day, it goes back and forth, but they continue to compete, and Taylor doesn't look at just one day when making the decision, but instead at the whole picture. He feels great about both of the backup quarterbacks, Shelley had a great spring, he's improved every day, accurate, athletic, smart, and Tuttle has similar qualities, and also gets the ball out quick.
  • Taylor looks at Shelley as a QB first, though he is elusive and a good runner, which adds to his skill set.
  • DHC is a very good player, and they'll miss having him, but he has a redshirt year. It's up to Devin Brumfield, Armand Shyne, and TJ Green to step up. TJ Green has improved, and Brumfield has been really good. He doesn't look like a freshman, he's physical, very smart, and Taylor thinks he's going to be a really good player.
  • Derrick Vickers took some snaps at RB today, and they're trying to find a place for him to help them out. He was a WR/RB hybrid in JuCo, so they're trying to find a place where he's comfortable and can have an impact, even if it's just 5-6 plays in a game. It's a lot of offense to pick up, so he's swimming a little bit right now, understandably so, but they're just trying to figure out where his skill set fits best.
