Football is back!...kind of.
It's come upon us Ute fans so quickly because with the success of the Runnin Utes we all have barely noticed that spring ball is back in session. Michelle did an amazing job giving some insight on the overall feel of practice and being able to watch so many different position groups and drills is unbelievable! Because I was only able to catch the tail end of practice because of my day time job (thank you point of the mountain construction) I want to briefly touch on some notes that I have regarding the trenches and give a little overview of what the team's schedule like is for week one. From what I did catch at practice all I can say is "Sack Lake City" has some great candidates to become the mayor of the city this upcoming season. Jason Fanaika is looking like he lifts Dumbbells in his sleep, the guy is JACKED! Hunter Dimick also had a strong outing with the rest of the D-Cock. Let's not over read into a strong first day from the defensive line because 1. They are not in pads 2. Offensive line is a much more techniqical position to play that requires time to bring back the technique as well be in since with the other 4 offensive linemen. The defensive line definitely had their way for the most part but that is pretty typical of the first day. Look for the offensive line to continue to gel together in the next couple practices and start opening up holes for Booker and company.

With spring ball having an every other day schedule many tend to wonder what happens on the off days. "Off days" are used to review the film and really learn the offensive scheme. Spring ball is probably the most hands on coaches can be in a class room environment and not only teach fundamentals and technique but also the theory behind the offense and help the players gain a big picture understanding of what is going on out on the field. This is when as an offensive linemen I was able to pick apart what a defense was going to do based on down and distance, shift of the front 7 and the rotation of the secondary. By having valuable classroom time, the players are able to understand the game as a whole and truly become students of the game. Players will also lift on these days and have extra time devoted to school work. So while it is called an "off day" there is certainly no lounging around for these players.
