Just got off the phone with Matt Mitchell, and I just want to say that he surprised me with his maturity and how intelligent his answers were.

Mitchell wouldn't tip his hand to me on where he'll commit, but he said that Utah is in the lead. A few schools are getting involved in his recruitment, including SDSU, Gonzaga, and UConn. He has one more official visit that he's allowed to use, but said that he'd use it wisely and "as an insurance policy." He said of those schools, SDSU and Utah are the ones recruiting him the hardest. He mentioned that the reason he asked for his LOI release from Cal State-Fullerton was that he wanted to play in tougher competition and has the utmost respect for Cal State and their staff.

He said that his Utah visit was an eye opener and was absolutely taken aback by Utah. He said that the weather was nice for his visit, and while he knows it snows here, he said that he wouldn't let something like weather affect his player and personal development and he'd be willing to adjust to it.

As far as what he took away from his visit, he said that he was impressed by the history of the Utes and the type of player development the Utes have shown to have. He said that the staff and him talked about how Delon Wright, Jakob Poeltl, and tonight, Kyle Kuzma weren't blue chip recruits, but they developed them into first round picks. That impressed Mitchell, because it's his goal to make it to that next level.

When Mitchell talked about his personal game, he said that he's willing to do whatever it takes for his team to win. He likes to play the wing and likes to shoot, as well as post up on smaller defenders and use his athleticism to get to the basket. He said that the staff envisions him playing the 2-3 at Utah and let his athleticism take over.

He said that he isn't sure if he'll take that final visit or not, but a decision should come by the first week of July by the latest, after he's able to talk it over with his family and knows for certain he's making the right decision. He did say that Utah felt like the perfect fit to him.
