Alright, alright, alright! Spring Ball kicked off today for the 2015 season and there was a lot to keep an eye on. Here are some of the things that stuck out to me as I watched day one of practice.
-Quarterbacks: during drills Wilson, Thompson, Manning and Isom looked really sharp throwing the ball. All four of those guys made some pretty impressive throws. Hansen looked a little rusty during the throwing drills but came alive during some of the live work. He certainly is very athletic and able to make some good moves. Cox also appeared to be more lively during live work showing his athleticism and quick thinking.
-The offensive line spent a good chunk of time working with the quarterbacks on protections. Initial reaction during live work is the offensive line was having a little bit of trouble pushing the defensive line aside to bust the running backs (specifically Booker) free. This is good news and bad news as it would appear the defensive line is doing it's job really well to start spring ball off. ***Remember this is just day one of practices!
-During one on one drills with the cornerbacks the receivers looked to be getting good seperation. At one point K Scott completely smoked Brian Allen. Raelon Singleton and Jameson field also looked particularly good during this drill. Boobie Hobbs appeared to struggle a little today for the cornerbacks. Reggie Porter appears to be doing well working his way back into football after his season ending injury. I honestly can't wait to see what he does once the knee brace comes off.
- The runningbacks were a little quiet today except for Troy McCormick. He was really the only one I noticed who was able to find holes to run through. Man that speed! If he keeps it up he really could be the cheese to Booker's macaroni (horrible analogy I know).
-Defensively Carter and J.Thompson stood out to me during interception drills. Those guys are so athletic and move well. With Carter it was obvious he was over-joyed to be out playing again.
-Someone asked about Moana Ofefahenguae the other night. I noticed him out playing during live work and he got some nice push on the offensive line. From the little I was able to observe him he appears to be in good shape and ready to put in work.
Just a few other side notes- K. Thompson was not sitting on his laurels during his recovery. He looks to be in good shape and based off my eye test appears to have maybe added some muscle which will be good. I over-heard a family friend telling Matt Piper that Thompson is about a month ahead of schedule and really is staying out of live work for percautionary reasons only.
Granted, again it's just day one but the air just seemed lighter at practice than it has in a while. I thought this was especially apparent with Wilson. Football looked like it was effortless and fun for him again which it's been a while since I've seen that from him. Hopefully that trend keeps up for him.
