Local High School Recruiting

A friend of mine who deals with high school coaches told me that the East High coach isn't too fond of the remaining Utah staff and is close to Sitake/Andersen. So the decision for the Folau kid was a no-brainer because the kid was also close to Sitake.

At this juncture, East High may see whatever prospect they produce go to Oregon State/anywhere but Utah bc it, like Catenwood, is somewhat of an anti-Utah lean right now. To paraphrase, the East High coach said something like; "I'm not dealing with f***** Morgan..they better assign someone else."

I don't know how accurate it is, but it seems that there are some high school coaches who aren't "Utah friendly" because they want their kids to go to a "big time" program vs going local to Utah, or they just don't like Coach Whitt, or someone in our program. Guess these coaches like the ego boost of saying they coached a kid who ended up at a namebrand school vs Utah, and/or there's some past drama with them and the Utes. As a result, we don't kill ourselves trying to sway their kids and instead spend our precious time, money, and energy with "feeder" schools and programs who are mostly-neutral on the Utes.

It would therefore make sense that we point a lot of efforts towards locations (South, Texas, and Cali) where we can get the same kind of guys that are being produced locally. The difference is, in these states we get the support of the kid's coaching staff and there are many more of them. In addition, the level of competition across the board may be higher and stronger overall in these states, so they feel that their skill levels may be higher than the local kids.

If this were the case, then it would make sense why were not getting as many local kids, since high school coaches are some of the most influential people in a prep kid's life. And to the prep coach, they would give their players advice on direction, to the place they think their kid will get the best treatment and shot, a staff whom they can trust.

I swear the more I learn about this stuff, the more I think there's more drama bullcrap in all of this than a Korean soap opera. Egos, egos, egos, and more egos...and grudges, holy moses the grudges...and backstabbing, man these guys all talk shit.

Anyway, just an interesting tidbit of recruiting info that was passed down to me, thought that I'd share. Dan and the rest, do you get this impression with some local high school coaches? Or are they pretty objective about where their kids go to school? Have you seen anti-Utah bias?
