Coach Whittingham held his weekly press conference this Monday morning addressing Saturday's loss, the bye week and looking forward to Washington State:
- Despite the loss, the team did some good things, defense showed up and is playing well and doing positive things.
- Special teams was a positive, Covey brought a spark to the team considering the fact that he could return a couple punts. The team had a big advantage in the punting game, with the ability to switch field position and help the defense.
- -2 in the turnover margin was the biggest issue of the night and was the main cause of the offensive struggles.
- The coaches believe in the players and have the same goals as before, they just need to find a way to put it all together.
- The Pac-12 South is still wide open to any team even though this loss stings.
- Like Huntley, Covey could do some things to avoid some of those shots he took but he is a tough kid.
- The coaches will look to get Shyne more carries if Moss is not ready but he should be at 100% by next Saturday. Whittingham also said they need to up his load when he's ready.
- The coaches look at and review every penalty to try and learn from it but the targeting one is hard to get a grasp on.
- The offensive line played a lot better and can keep improving to the point where they can dominate games.
- Washington played great defense but the offense did not capitalize on the opportunities they were given. The fact that the offense came up empty with such great field position in the fourth quarter is inexcusable.
- Dropping balls can be contagious, it is not due to lack of effort or practice, and it will be corrected and addressed.
- If the receivers didn't drop the ball, Huntley's numbers would have been great with the drops his numbers were just average.
- Huntley has room for improvement, like everybody, but there is no reason for a controversy, he gives the team the best chance to win.
- The team is physical and have a great back in Zack Moss, they want to be physical in the run game, take care of the football, and have big play ability down the field. This is the what the coaches would like as an "identity" for the offense.
- It's too early to tell but the name of the game on offense is putting points up and taking care of the football, the coaches are confident in their offensive players. But there needs to be more of a balance in the passing game with more passes down the field.
