I've been following the posts on performance of our Utes and others at the NFL Combine. I'm sure there is some correlation between how fast a guy is, how much he bench presses, his shuttle time etc. and the likelihood of success in the NFL or they wouldn't be testing for this stuff.
I guess my question is, how heavily do NFL teams weight the "measurables" vs. things that can't be measured (what's in a guy's heart (competitiveness) and head (football IQ/ technique at his position/instinctiveness) and character?
I'm sure we have had some great NFL players who had average measurables (Joe Montana? Tom Brady?) but ended up being terrific players and others who had great measurables who didn't pan out so well. I'm sure some guys measurables translate very well in terms of what they did at the next level.
So, I guess my question is, how big of a role do combine results have in determining draft order. My own guess is that disappointing measurables probably drop you a round or two and impressive ones my increase your draft order a round or two but there's so much of what goes into being successful that can't be measured with a stop watch.
Heartless: I know you're pretty well connected with NFL scouts. I'd be curious to get your take on this. I'd welcome insights from anyone else who might have them.
