The Red Rocks are off to a fantastic start to the season but they aren't getting ANY coverage on this site. I know there are at least a few people who are interested in how they are doing. I'm a season ticket holder and I'm pretty sure Vegas is too. If enough people are interested I'm sure that two of us (I only volunteer Vegas because I'm pretty sure he'd chime in anyway with a nice report or augmentation to my report without any problem) could provide the coverage - along with anyone else who would like to add their two cents.
My first report will be very brief since I have a lot of snow to throw. Last night was a quad meet and we faced a good Denver squad, Boise State (who also had a solid performance) and Illinois-Chicago. We got our season high with a 197.625. Denver came in 2nd with a 196.875; BSU was 3rd at 196.225 and Chicago was last with a 193.25 - even BYU could have beaten them. For the record, this meet counts as three wins and the 197.625 score counts three times in the record books (not that it's a record, but it's a very solid score, especially considering the fact that the judging in the PAC-12 is tougher than the Big 12 where 198 is semi-common for OU.
There were a lot of great performances including a couple by Baely Rowe (if you haven't seen her beam routine, you need to). But Mykayla Skinner won the night again and will most assuredly win more PAC-12 awards - she has won the PAC-12 freshman of the week 2 weeks in a row. She scored a 9.975 on both vault and floor a 9.925 on the beam and a 9.90 on the bars. She won the all-around for the 3rd time this season (that's every time) with a 39.775. In case you are wondering, that is not a record; Sandy Metz holds the record from a meet in 1995 with a 39.95. I don't think that record will ever be broken but it should be noted that the judging / scoring has changed since then and it takes a lot more to get the high scores.
Baely won bars and tied for 1st on beam (with Mykayla) while Mykayla won vault and floor outright. Her beam routine was clean and her floor routine has a level of difficulty that is in a different league than most of the gymnasts. Her 3rd pass is far more difficult than the most gymnast's first pass. If you haven't seen the Red Rocks in a while, I highly recommend taking your wife (or husband for the ladies on the board) on a date night to see these amazing gals. They are fun to watch and I'm looking forward to what they can do this season.
