Coach Pease was interviewed on ESPN 700 yesterday. It was a 19 minute interview, his personality really comes out, and he made some encouraging comments.
He was offered the job by Whittingham while he was trying to sell Whit on a friend of his who was interested in the opening (he was not actively seeking the opening)He mentioned that Scalley was one of the top choices and approached Pease to tell him that he would give him his all (he was very complimentary of Scalley)He and Kyle have been talking about how they may have the tools this season to play with just the base defense at timesIt sounded like it's going to still be the Whittingham scheme, but Pease has ideas and modifications he will devise and share with Kyle, but no wholesale changes from the sound of itHe has been impressed by how much progress the DBs have shown year to year under ShahThey feel they have 8 solid DLs (between the DEs and DTs) which he pointed out was "unheard of" He walked through the defense from a high level and it sounded like he was confident about every position group and only was concerned about LB depth (said that he feared an injury at LB) and about one of the safety spots, which I assume he meant whoever was going to play opposite of Carter (he said that Tevin Carter was working out and looking good and that Scalley told him that they had a number of capable players who could play next to Carter)He was very complimentary of Justin Ena, saying that he was a former D coordinator, smart, and energeticHe considers himself more of an educator/teacher than a "motivator"
