I wanted to give my opinion of a couple new commits here and there leading up to signing day and give my opinion of what their positives are, what they might need to work on, and what I feel their outlook is with their future up on the hill. Again this is just my opinion, but hopefully it gives a different prospective to you all of what my views are concerning these new commits.
Deniko Carter: Did everyone check out this dude's reach on his recruiting trip picture?? Holy Megatron is all I have to say about that. I Like many of you are extremely excited to see this guy in action next year. Watching his film, I agree that he probably isn't running a true 4.3 40yrd dash but I think it is reasonable to say he is running a mid 4.4 or low 4.5 , translation is he is pretty dang fast. I think his positives are his natural God-given talent of being 6'4 with long legs and the longest reach I've ever seen. All joking aside, I think he can be greatly utilized replacing Dres as a deep ball threat. His length allows him to be able to go up and grab most jump balls and he has really good break away speed coupled with crazy long stride. He isn't going to be a guy that is going to juke out defenders in traffic and I am interested to see how he does with crossing routes and blocking responsibilities come spring ball. Even with that, I see him making an immediate impact on offense being a key deep ball threat anytime he is in the game. Oh and to top it all off, look for Deniko getting serious looks at being a kick off returner. Once he hits his full stride, it is almost impossible for defenders to keep up with him.
Keven Dixon Jr.:
Another 6'6 tackle is welcomed with open arms by coach Harding and the rest of the OBlock. Just so you all know, offensive line is one of the hardest positions to grade when looking at high school film. There is so much growth that happens to a lineman when he reaches college and so to purely judge a kid by his high school film and seeing his "knockdowns" and "pancake" blocks on his high school film can give a skewd view of these high school linemen. With that said, I like a lot of what I see in Keven Dixon, especially with his raw athletic ability and his natural flowing playing style. He doesn't look stiff when pass blocking and has some ability to change direction in space. Those are two big positives to Dixon's game. I also think he does a good job finishing blocks and plays to the whistle well. Where he will obviously improve with the help of Harding will be his hand placement and pad level on run blocks as well as better pass protection technique. He tends to open up quickly against outside pass rushers but trust me when I say 98% of all offensive linemen have this issue when entering college. I see him as being a red-shirt kid where he will be able to put on about 20-30 pounds on his frame and build some much needed overall strength. Look for him to start making waves in the program around his redshirt sophomore year and fight for a starting spot.
I will be doing more breakdowns as we continue on the road to signing day and hopefully it gives you guys a little more insight on these future Utes.
