I've noticed a pattern that goes something like this.

Stage 1, the "Meh" stage: Utah gets a commitment from an athlete (Let's call him 5.5 for his Rivals rating) that most fans know squat about. The initial reaction usually is critical as 5.5 has mostly a G5 offer sheet. Most fans bemoan the lack of big time offers.

Stage 2, myth building stage: Fans watch highlight films and see 5.5 beating up on crappy competition. The mods relay positive comments about 5.5 from inside the program and fans start gushing about his ability.

Stage 3, the worrying stage: As 5.5 starts gathering attention from other programs, fans start to worry that 5.5 will decommit and his value, in the minds of fans, rises even more until he hits the critical value stage where most fans can't bear the thought of losing him.

Stage 4, devastation: 5.5 decommits from Utah. Fans are angry and start the blame game. They blame the coaches, they blame each other, they curse the football gods. When Utah gets a commitment from 5.5(b) the next day, most ridicule the replacement saying he'll never fill the shoes of the legendary 5.5.
