For those college football nutjobs like me who can’t stand the offseason, this might be for you. With all the talk of a college football playoff in the news lately I decided to get creative with the only simulation tools I have: a PS3 and NCAA 12. Using the final BCS regular season standings for seeding; I have created a 24 team playoff (24 teams because the BCS standings doesn’t extend to 32) that I will simulate to see who virtually would have been the national champion. First off, I am in not in favor at all of a 24 team playoff. This is not conducive in reality. My playoff starts on December 17 (two weeks after the conference title games) and extends until January 14th. The Top 8 seeds all have first round byes and the higher seeded team will host until the semi-finals. The semi-finals will be played at the Orange and Sugar Bowls. The championship will be played at the Rose Bowl. I have gone to great extents to make this simulation as legitimate as possible including roster changes due to injury or suspension and even accurate weather conditions at the site where the games would have been played. Check it out here: http://short-sideoption.blogspot.com/ , it’s a good source of entertainment in the off-season! Also, what are Ute fans idea for a playoff format (if College Football should have one at all?)

We have had similar debates. Overall most Utah fans are strongly in favor of a playoff (due to hitting the glass ceiling after the Sugar Bowl).

Older guys (myself included) seem to favor a 16 team playoff that allows each D1 champion in plus at large invites (all to BCS conference runner ups?).

Younger gusy seem to favor an 8 team format.

Bowls and their history seem to complicate things, naturally we'd like your Rose Bowl for the championship, those in the South might think otherwise?

@Tube, you are probably right...those that live where the Sugar Bowl is the coveted destination are going to be a little hesitant to allow the Rose Bowl to be the title game. One good way to get by that is to have the quarter final games and semi final games in major bowl slots. So have the Fiesta, Cotton, Holiday, and Orange Bowls host the quarter finals while the Rose and the Sugar host the semi's. Then bid the final game out much like you would the super bowl. I like that you are considering conference runners up or at-larges; one thing that these people who are wanting 'champion-only' playoffs aren't thinking about is if that is the only way to gain access to the playoffs; you might see a conference de-alignment of different sorts. Georgia would want to join the Sun Belt, Arkansas would want in CUSA, Florida would want in the Big East, etc. The amount of money figures being thrown out there dwarfs any BCS payout right now.....would it be enough to cause conference dealignment? I hope not.

In the Pac12, the original pac8 want the Rose Bowl to remain as it was Pac12 vs. Big10.
