Coach Whittingham took a few minutes after the team's practice this afternoon to answer some questions from the media. Here is what he talked about:
  • The same position battles are still in play after today. None of the players were able to gain any advantage over the other today. Friday we will be able to have a complete 2 deep depth chart.
  • Third down and red zone situations have been a topic of conversation between the coaches as of late and each day they are practicing situations to be able to execute better in the games. The coaching staff has added some wrinkles but Whittingham commented that ultimately it us up to the players to make the plays that are supposed to be made instead of changing the strategy or play call.
  • There are still question marks about who will be the last two offensive lineman to rotate and be that final piece to the puzzle.
  • Matt Gay and Mitch Wishnowsky are deserving of the national attention they are receiving as they both have been placed on the pre season All-American list. Whittingham also commented that Gay's longest kick in a live situation has been 67 yards.
  • The Utes also rewarded a scholarship to freshman Maddie Golden after he was able to win the starting long snapper job, with hope that position is solidified for the next four years.
  • With the new redshirt rule, the coaching staff has made a list of guys that they have plan to play for four games or less with the hope of being able to red shirt them after this season. Jack Tuttle is one of these guys but this will be according to the situation as well as injuries and other factors.
Coach Whittingham was pleased with today's practice and the level of energy there was. Comment or ask questions about any topic and we will do our best to give you the most accurate response.
