I used to frequent the Huntsman Center often. Loved the program from Pimm through Majerus. I grew tired of Majerus towards the end with his one foot in, one foot out approach. Since Majerus' departure the basketball program is a dumpster fire although I remain hopeful Smith can figure it out. There have been musings about Harlan, Jensen, Coach K, on and on but one thing is for absolute certain....
No one cares nor does anyone have any pride in Utah basketball. Back to my "I used to frequent the Huntsman Center often" quote. For the first time in YEARS I went up to the Hunty to watch the boy's 6A basketball playoff. I WAS STUNNED to see how it was in such disarray. We stood line line to get my kid an ice cream. The back of the line was right next to the Runnin' Ute's men's trophy case. The case was embarassing - a layer of dust surrounding everything in it. It is obvious it had not been touched in forever. Imagine the football facility treating it's "shrines" that way. It is a motif for the program in general. A broad layer of dust, lack of pride, lack of enthusiasm and with seemingly little care to improve it.
With respect to Harlan... I hear rumblings about the guy. I have no idea how good or not he is. BUT, while I love Chris Hill and how he transformed Utah athletics, I can also say with a strong opinion that he wrecked basketball with misfire after misfire after misfire. I hope Smith can bring the magic back but we are a football school now and basketball is simply an after thought for many.
