To be honest, not a whole lot to talk about as the spring game is what it is: a watered down, basic scrimmage for the fans more than actual football work. Offensive guys are taking snaps on defense, the game plans are vanilla on both sides of the ball and few fall contributors were on the field. So this will be a bit more of a wrap than focusing solely on the scrimmage.
  1. Chris Hart arguably had the best spring of any non-senior defender. He added size and strength while keeping his burst and explosiveness. He'll be the fourth end and will see a lot of playing time in the rotation.
  2. Questions were not answered at linebacker. Cody Barton and Sunia Tauteoli are solid, but depth is a problem. Competition will pick up in the fall with the additions of Kurtis Taufa, David Luafatasaga and Donovan Thompson - and possibly Davir Hamilton. Utah really needs to find at least four guys they are comfortable playing.
  3. MacKay Dunn had the best spring of the walk-onset. He worked his tail off and into the two-deep at corner - a position that rarely sees walk-onset earn any time, even in the spring. I doubt he'll keep that spot, but he will be a contributor on special teams. Great competitor.
  4. It's not fair how talented and deep the defensive line is. Even without the top seven linemen and splitting the remaining talent between the teams, the lines were solid. That is consistent with the rest of the practices.
  5. Turnovers might be a concern. The defense let a few opportunities slip between their fingers, and came away with just one interception. They have had problems in the spring forcing turnovers, something that they need to correct in the fall.
