Day eight of spring ball was spirited with neither side wanting to give in which sets the stage for an intense first scrimmage this Saturday at Rice Eccles Stadium. Here is who/what stood out today on offense:
1) After missing a few practices both Kenneth Scott and Raelon Singleton were back in action for the wide receiver corps and I thought it made all the difference in the world- especially with Scott. That group had new energy and they looked much better than they did Tuesday and it was in large part due to the fire Scott brings with him all the time. These guys are mostly young and have a lot they can learn from Scott. Having him practice with them will get it done faster.
2) Devontae Booker was out making good plays as usual. He probably has some of the best body control I've ever seen from a back. The one handed snags he constantly makes are out of this world simply because he's almost always in an awkward position to be trying to grab them in the first place. He certainly may be one of the best athletes to ever come through Utah.
3) Hansen continued to make some strides today. There were a couple of passes he threw that I was really impressed with. One he snuck in to K. Scott who had two DBs on him and the other he found Gonzalez streaking between the LBs and DBs. He's showing some good field awareness and doesn't hesitate when he sees a window of opportunity. I will admit though he had a batted ball and he threw a really scary ball to Tavaris Williams who I have to add was having an outstanding day on defense. Bottom line is Hansen is making all the right moves and he's been doing a whole lot more good than he has bad.
4) With Brandon Cox out of the picture until fall camp Donovan Isom is getting a few more looks which I think is incredibly beneficial to him and Utah. While Wilson, Thompson, Hansen and Manning were working with the WRs Isom was working with the RBs. Having little opportunities like that will certainly help Isom move along in his progression as a potential candidate for the starting job next year. I should also add he stayed after today with K. Thompson and Jameson Field to work on passes. You have to love guys that stay after to not only perfect their own craft but help others do so as well.
5) Utah might have the second coming of Steve Smith on their hands in Kenric Young. The guy has a lot to say out on the field and it's highly entertaining watching him banter with the DBs. Obviously he still needs to work on making consistent big plays to match the talk but once he gets it down I expect him to be a fan favorite. He's got just that little bit of edge and swagger to him that will make for some memorable plays hopefully sooner rather than later.
