The day started a little slow for the offense but they soon picked it up and some of the younger guys showed really well today. Here is who and what stood out on offense:
1) First and foremost to note is that Tim Patrick was back in action during drills but is still being held out from live work. He's a bit rusty but over all had a good day. I suspect it will take some time for him to get back in the full groove of things, but this is good news for a very young and inexperienced group in the wide receivers.
2) Delshawn McClellon had a very nice day after being held back from the monster hit he took Saturday from Jason Thompson. According wide receivers coach Taylor Stubblefield McCormick learned a very valuable lesson that day about completing his routes (more to come in an article). He made some very nice catches today including a beauty from Travis Wilson that hit him in stride.
3) In the first round of eleven on eleven the offense sputtered a little. Specifically at the line of scrimmage. The first and second string defensive lines are no joke people and they were making life miserable for the offensive linemen and Travis Wilson/Chase Hansen. Overall I felt Hansen handled the pressure pretty well. I thought Wilson looked lost when the defensive line came crashing through. In the second round of eleven on elevens though I felt the offensive lines settled down and gave Wilson and Hansen more adequate time to make their reads and make plays.
4) During seven on seven drills I thought Kendal Thompson continued to really shine. It seems like he's cleaned some things up and is connecting much better with his receivers than last year. Watching him he's a very methodical player. He looks comfortable and confident. This is obviously with no pressure in his face and fall will be really telling, but if he keeps this up he could definitely make things real interesting come fall.
5)Tyrone Smith and Jameson Field also had very respectable days making plays for the offense. Tyrone Smith made a beautiful catch while double covered on the sideline off a Wilson pass. Later Hansen showed great patience waiting for Field to open up for a pass on the post. Field had to shake off Marcus Williams, Boobie Hobbs and Dominique Hatfield to get wide open- not exactly an easy feat.
