Thank goodnessfor the practice facility. It would have been miserable in the 70 mile per hour winds, rain, and eventually snow.
1) Porter day Tuesday - coming off of injury Porter is only practicing on Tuesdays, and today he made it count. he was by far the most consistent pass defender this afternoon. one play in particular showed me that he is coming off his injury very well. Porter was backpedaling in the end zone when his receiver made a cut to the front pylon. Porter had to plant hard on his left leg, his braced leg, and had a huge amount of burst to get in front of the ball and not get away from the receiver preventing the touchdown. Although the coaches are playing it safe with him he looks to have overcome any hiccups from his injury.
2) the first touchdown of the day came from an interception by Marcus Williams. Kylon Pierre was in close coverage with Tyrone Smith fighting for the sideline of the endzone. Smith made a move towards the goal line, but Williams knew exactly what was coming. He came from the middle of the endzone and beat Smith to the ball, caught the ball, stayed in bounds and took off down the sideline.
3) Casey Hughes played some outstanding football today. The redshirt freshman hasn't stood out much this spring, but demanded attention today. On two consecutive plays he controlled the sideline. on the first play he was locked up in a block, was able to shed his block quickly, then was able to force Seabrook to run the ball back inside where she tackled him for no gain. The very next play Seabrook received a sideline pass behind the line of scrimmage where Seabrook was instantly de cleated by Hughes, Hughes also forced the ball loose. It would have to be reviewed to decide if it were a catch or not, but the coverage was perfect.
4) Justin Thomas was the latest Ute to pick off Travis Wilson. AS I have seen a lot of Wilson in spring, he has a tendency to throw in front of slant routes. Once again Wilson led his intended receiver, and the straight into the arms of Thomas. Thomas then threw the ball up in the air nonchalantly, as if saying, "this is too easy."
5) Only one tipped ball today, and it wasn't from Wilson. This time Hayden Clegg batted down a Hansen pass. Clegg has taken advantage of his reps with Fitts out. Proving that Utah may be more than 2 deep at that position. All Pease would tell me about Fitts is that he has a slight injury. He still participates in just about everything, minus the few live snaps.
