Alright ladies and gents. It was a blustery day outside but things were heating up inside the Spence Eccles Field House. Here is who and what stood out on offense:
1) Kenric Young probably had his best day of spring today and it extended beyond the field of play. Young's potential is unquestionable, but consistency has hindered him. Today he was making great grab after great grab. One that particularly stood out was in the one on one drills with the cornerbacks. Young literally had to fight all the way down to the ground for the ball with Casey Hughes and he won. Young extended what he was showing on the field by showing great leadership too. Tyrone Smith made a bad play and was visibly upset taking his helmet off and throwing it to the ground as he walked off the field. Young was the first person by Smith's side talking to him and getting him to calm down. It was an impressive act from someone who is just a sophomore.
2) While Smith had some issues he also made a really nice play in one on ones pulling in a one hander all the while having to fight off Dominique Hatfield. Raelon Singleton had two really remarkable leaping grabs, one of which came against Reggie Porter. In general I thought the young guys for the receivers showed a little more fire and passion out on the field than they have in the past. It's one day, but talking with coach Stubblefield after practice this is something he is actively working on with his guys. (More on that to come later.)
3) Travis Wilson was a mixed bag today. He made a couple of really nice plays- he found a streaking Tyrone Smith through the middle and also connected with Bubba Poole on the sideline and Poole did a really nice job of tip-toeing the line for extra YAC. On the other hand Wilson struggled to connect on the deep ball. He completely missed on a wide-open K. Scott who had shaken off his defender and had nothing but green heading into the endzone. He also didn't connect with K. Young on the sideline putting way too much on the ball. A little more touch and Young probably could have just gotten his toes for a monstrous first down.
4) There were some turnovers and batted balls today (to be expected). Wilson threw a ball right into Justin Thomas hands completely missing his intended receiver by 4 feet or so. Kendal Thompson didn't anticipate Marcus Williams making some fast moves to get to a ball he tried to squeeze into his receiver. (Before that Thompson had made a beautiful nearly 55 yard pass to Tyrone Smith who had gotten some nice separation for an easy touchdown during seven on sevens.) Finally, Chase Hansen had a ball batted down at the line of scrimmage by (we think) Hayden Clegg.
5) Kendal Thompson and Donovan Isom stayed long after practice to work on throwing- specifically it looked to me the long ball. I also noticed Thompson giving Isom pointers on footwook. There really are a ton of leaders on this team, and a ton of young guys who are eager to prove themselves. It's nice to see everyone working hard towards a common goal.
