I want to thank the football program for adjusting after they had to understandably cancel the interviews after the spring game. Whittingham spent some time with the media today, and here’s a breakdown of what he had to say:
-Whittingham said the transfers of Gilmore and Reed were calculated and expected. They need to improve the receiver room.
-There’s room on the roster now to add at least 6 more players.
-Rising is throwing, doing great and ahead of schedule. You still want to play it safe to avoid any unexpected swelling. They see him ramping it up with two weeks before the Florida game.
-Kuithe is almost cleared and should be good to good for summer conditioning.
-He thinks Kincaid will be an outstanding NFL player. Great team, great QB, he’ll also compliment their TE Knox. Called Kincaid a top 5 athlete to ever come out of Utah. Thinks he’ll be one of the best TEs in 3-5 years.
-Excited for Clark Phillips III and Braeden Daniels (ones he was specifically asked about). He expects Clark to go 2-3.
-The Crimson Collective is huge. He admits the program is two years behind with it, but never late than never.
-Brandon Rose is the favorite for the backup role to Rising, but there’s still competition. If they had to play tomorrow, Rose would start. He likes the QB progress, but he said it’s unfortunate that Nate Johnson missed a third of spring ball.
-By mid spring Cole Becker really hit his stride with field goals. He’s also great at kickoffs, which Whittingham admits was a weakness last year. Bouwmeester also is punting the ball further.
-Whittingham is happy with the new rule that runs the clock after first downs. He’s been a proponent of it for years. He also joked that he’s all for shorter halftime too, but that takes time away from the bands.
-Nate Ritchie should be a full go this summer. Whittingham said the team only has 1-2 injuries right now that should impact the fall.
-OL is a big strength. A dozen guys competing for ten travel spots. RB is strong. WR is a work in progress that needs players added. They could use another TE.
-DL solid up front including DE. DE is as stacked as they’ve ever had it. Linebackers will be solid once they add Levani Damuni and Sione Fotu. He’s also really happy with the secondary.
